Sažetak

In this paper, we will look into a privileged dystopian space in the novels of Andrea De Carlo and examine to what extent islands or island-like spaces are perceived as imaginary non-places (Augé), e.g., as metaphoric spaces aimed at escaping from urbanity being interpreted as physical and metaphorical phenomenon that put upon its inhabitants the feelings of anxiety and crisis. The author questions global policies and trends, and looks with disdain to hypocrisy, and the elitism of the few vs. the conformity of the many. De Carlo is concerned with the individual crisis that emerges and pours itself over the collective, focusing primarily on the feeling of resignation and alienation. The crisis is felt in cities, but also in metaphorical nonplaces, seemingly self-sufficient, sometimes even unreal paradises (Bachelard), such as the house, isolated spaces, etc., which the author parallels in his works. De Carlo nurtures a constant love-hate relationship with his hometown Milan, speaking about the dominance and confrontation of newly acquired and newly imposed social values, trying to understand feelings of both individuals and the collective, immersed in existential struggles. De Carlo absorbs and ironically depicts the manifestations of crisis, realistically, consistently, and ironically describing the contemporary world in all its characteristics: vices, obsessions, fears, flaws, and contradictions. With this regard, the author favors and recognizes the island as a metaphor for a utopian place that provides security in escaping from urbanity.
