Abstract
The paper describes impersonal sentences in grammars of the Croatian language from 1790 to the end of the 1820s. There are eight grammars, five of which were written for the Štokavian literary linguistic stylization, and three for the Kajkavian. I discuss the terms for the impersonal sentence and the verbal person in these grammars, and the approach to the category of impersonality. In four grammars, the description is in Croatian, and in the others, in Latin, Italian and/or German, so in relation to this, I describe the grammars classified into two groups, the first contains three grammars with a description in Croatian: Jurin (1793), Starčević (1812), Đurkovečki (1826), and the second group contains five grammars with a description in German or Italian. Since four grammars from the second group have been translated into the modern Croatian standard language: Kornig (1795), Voltić (1803), Appendini (1808), Matijević (1810), only Lanosović (1795) has not been translated, in the second group I also look at the terminology in the translation, comparing it with the terminology in grammars contemporary with the Croatian language of description and with modern Croatian linguistic terminology.
