Abstract

This paper presents a bioarchaeological analysis of five cremation graves from the prehistoric cemetery of Vukovar Lijeva Bara, which belongs to the Dalj group of the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age, distributed across the Middle Danube region. The graves are dated to ceramic horizon II , or specifically to the 9th century BC, based on radiocarbon dating results for the cremated human remains. The pottery assemblages were locally produced, whereas the iron finds – a fibula, beads, and a whorl – show parallels with the eastern Carpathian Basin, the Lower Danube region, and the southeastern Balkans. Of particular note is the find of an iron double-loop fibula with a broad triangular foot from grave Ž75, featuring three knobs on the bow decorated with horizontal incisions inlaid with copper alloy. Parallels for this fibula have been recorded in the Lower Danube region; it is currently one of the earliest known iron artefacts from Dalj group sites.
