Abstract
This paper presents the results of archaeological excavations conducted in 2019 at the Kalinovac – Hrastova Greda 1 site. The site exhibits both settlement and workshop characteristics (ironworking activities); however, the focus of this study is placed on the analysis of settlement finds – specifically ceramic material – with the aim of more accurately dating the investigated area. Although the recovered vessels are characterised by fairly similar features, macroscopic analysis based on rim morphology, fabric, manufacturing technique, and decoration enabled their differentiation and classification into two distinct groups. Despite the distinguishing features between certain pots being minimal or difficult to discern in some instances, the analysis succeeded in defining their chronological attribution more precisely. The earlier group of ceramic pots dates to the mid-to-late 8th century, while the later group can be dated to the 9th century, a conclusion further supported by absolute dating obtained from radiocarbon analysis of two samples of charcoal. Whether this site was occupied continuously or with interruptions from the mid-8th throughout the 9th century remains an open question, as the excavated portion of the site provides no defi nitive answers.
