Abstract

During machine removal of a large stone heap in Srinjine,
remnants of a Roman press for olive oil production were found
accidentally. Conservators and staff of the Archaeological
Museum in Split were notified of the find. Subsequent supervision
and protective archaeological research revealed the
remnants of a room with a floor, housing the olive oil press.
The finds and remnants of masonry structures were well-preserved
due to being discarded, and subsequently, over the decades,
buried by rocks obtained by land-clearing and cultivating
the surrounding fields. In recent years, even refuse was
piled onto the heap. The discovery suggests the presence of
an agricultural estate, potentially featuring a countryside villa or a church, reminiscent of Salona. Furthermore, this find
is yet another evidence supporting olive cultivation and processing
in the Srinjine area and the broader Roman province
of Dalmatia.
