Abstract

Andropause is the result of decreasing testosterone levels related to age. With the aging of the population, it is becoming an increasingly significant public health problem. Although a large number of older men have low testosterone levels, only a smaller portion have the clinical picture of hypogonadism and require testosterone replacement therapy. In this population, replacement therapy has relatively modest effects and is burdened with health risks such as cardiovascular risks and the risk of prostate cancer. Before starting treatment, the patient must be informed of all potential benefits and dangers of the therapy. During treatment, the patient needs to be regularly monitored in order to adjust the testosterone dose and to promptly detect any possible side effects.
