Abstract

A healthy diet and healthy foods are the basis for prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in developed countries. This work examines specific nutritional requirements of the male population, considering physiological, hormonal and metabolic differences in comparison to women, such as a propensity towards visceral obesity, earlier onset of atherosclerosis and sarcopenia. Evidence is presented on the efficacy of dietary models such as the Mediterranean and DASH diets in reducing cardiometabolic risk, increasing endothelial function and protecting reproductive health. Particular emphasis is placed on the significance of adequate protein intake (1.2–2.0 g/kg/day) to prevent muscle loss, with stress on the consumption of plants and fish, while red and processed meats should be rationed. The work also examines the role of specific micronutrients (vitamin D, zinc, magnesium, polyphenols) and healthy fats (omega-3, olive oil) in controlling inflammatory processes and hormones. In conclusion, an individualized approach to nutrition, as well as the elimination of ultra-processed foods, alcohol, and excessive salt intake, is a key strategy to reaching optimal cardiovascular health and longevity in men.
