Sažetak

Cardiovascular diseases are the most prevalent cause of morbidity and mortality in the Republic of Croatia. Cardiovascular (atherosclerotic) diseases are connected to the incidence of well-known risk factors such as age, arterial hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia and smoking. Lately, there is increasing knowledge of the great influence of gender on cardiovascular diseases. Gender can affect both the prevalence and appearance of atherosclerosis, which is the basis of most cardiovascular diseases. The objective of this review is to show the influence of gender, especially male, on the incidence and presentation of cardiovascular diseases. Also presented are the particular effects of individual risk factors with respect to gender. Similarly, certain variances in therapeutic modalities with observed differences in relation to the patient’s gender are also exhibited.
