Sažetak

Summary:
This paper compares the orthographic, morphological, and lexical features of the language in the first edition of the short story collection "Pod starimi krovovi" (1886) by Ksaver Šandor Gjalski with those in the edition published 110 years later (1996). Based on the analysis of the same excerpt from the short story “Illustrissimuus Battorych” in the two editions, linguistic units that were altered in the 1996 edition compared to the first edition are identified. The observed differences in orthography, morphology, and vocabulary between the two editions of the same collection of short stories aim to shed light on the motives and reasons behind the editing of the original text. The study also seeks to demonstrate that the editors of Gjalski’s collection did not arbitrarily alter the author's language; rather, the changes were made by the author himself due to sensitivity to the historical moment and significant shifts in the development of the Croatian standard language, as well as due to his loyalty to his organic Kajkavian idiom.
