Crusaders in the Savska Banovina: In the light of documents from the Croatian State Archives, 1935–1938

Sažetak
Crusader movement in the Savska Banovina from 1935 to 1939. The main sources are reports from district chiefs and gendarmerie stations sent to the relevant authorities: The Royal Ban Administration of the Savska Banovina – Department for State Protection, and the Command of the Gendarmerie Regiment headquartered in Zagreb. The leadership of the Crusader organizations in individual parishes, as in the previous period, acted contrary to their own rules. Their focus was not so much on spiritual and religious activities as on secular issues. In public processions they wore uniforms with national symbols, which was strictly forbidden. Speakers at their gatherings provoked and attacked Communists, Jews, Freemasons, and Serbs. For these offenses they were punished with fines and imprisonment. Beginning in 1934, the Zagreb Archdiocese began reorganizing the work of lay associations with the aim of incorporating them into the activities of Catholic Action.
