In the Shadow of the Festa – the Linguistic and Traditional Richness of Saint Blaise Celebrations in Slano, Ston, and Janjina

Sažetak
Numerous studies and books have explored the profound connection between Saint Blaise and the city of Dubrovnik. The most prominent expression of this bond is the celebration held on February 3rd, the feast day of Saint Blaise, known as the Dubrovnik Festa. As an integral part of the cultural identity of the local community, the Festa has been internationally recognized for its significance and uniqueness, earning a place on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Festa serves as a symbolic reflection of the former Republic of Dubrovnik, embodying its values and social customs. The Republic actively promoted the veneration of Saint Blaise in newly acquired territories by establishing parishes and constructing churches dedicated to him. Many of these churches have been preserved and continue to commemorate the feast of their patron saint, albeit in a more modest manner.
The title of this paper metaphorically alludes to the need to raise awareness and appreciation of the traditions surrounding the celebration and veneration of Saint Blaise in the Dubrovnik region. The research will focus specifically on three centres: Slano, (Ston), and Janjina. The paper will present memories and records of Saint Blaise celebrations in these locations. A linguistic analysis will also be conducted, which will not only reveal a rich variety of linguistic forms essential for the study of Croatian language history, but also underscore the grandeur and cultural significance of the Festa.
