Sažetak

Police crisis negotiation is one of the most effective tools available to police in resolving crisis interventions. The types of perpetrators with whom crisis negotiators deal are diverse and include those suffering from various mental disorders. Such perpetrators are demanding and challenging in the context of negotiation and police operations in general. Most police officers will encounter situations requiring police action in relation to individuals with mental illness; therefore, this paper aims to present specific communication strategies for interacting with such perpetrators, which can significantly facilitate everyday police interventions. The paper analyses the psychiatric disorders most commonly encountered among such individuals, including depression, schizophrenia, and certain personality disorders. Guidelines for improving negotiation practice in Croatia are also provided.
