Sažetak
Acute pancreatitis (AP) is the most common and clinically significant inflammatory disease of the exocrine pancreas in dogs. Despite numerous studies, diagnosing AP remains challenging. This review provides a detailed analysis of current diagnostic methods for AP in dogs, with particular emphasis on the difficulties encountered in establishing a reliable diagnosis due to its nonspecific clinical signs and the limitations of routine laboratory tests. A multimodal approach is outlined, incorporating clinical findings, assessment of laboratory biomarkers – especially pancreatic lipase – and the use of imaging techniques. Cytological and histopathological sampling methods of the pancreas are also discussed, with emphasis on the careful and selective use of invasive procedures. In conclusion, the diagnosis of AP should be based on the integration of clinical presentation, laboratory results, and imaging findings, with an understanding of the limitations of individual methods, thereby improving the accuracy and timeliness of diagnosing acute pancreatitis in dogs.
