Political Socialization: How Your Parents' Values Influence Your Political Participation

Sažetak
The present article provides a critical examination of the correlation between
family, values, and political participation. Drawing on a comprehensive literature review, it synthesises diverse theoretical perspectives and recent empirical findings to illuminate how values acquired from parental figures shape individuals' engagement in the political sphere. The analysis under highlights the mechanisms of value transmission within families and their long-term influence on political attitudes and behaviours. A review of seminal studies in the field, coupled with a thorough examination of the extant literature, reveals that, while the impact of parental influence is significant, its effect is tempered by a number of factors, including socio-economic status, cultural context, and generational change. Furthermore, it identifies the inconsistencies and disparities present in the extant literature within the current
field, thereby highlighting the importance of longitudinal studies and the inclusion of life course studies. The paper concludes with the proposition of new research directions, with the aim of deepening our understanding of the interplay between family socialisation and political participation.
