Abstract

Guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) are becoming increasingly popular as pets. Nevertheless, they are
still considered a diagnostic and treatment challenge.
Eimeria caviae is the only species of Eimeria genus found in guinea pigs. This case report describes
the development of clinical symptoms, and the diagnostics and treatment of coccidiosis
in three guinea pigs from the same household. Despite the close contact of guinea pigs with
humans, very few samples are sent for parasitological coprological examination. The aim of this paper
is to draw attention to the importance of quarantine
and parasitological coprological examination of newly acquired guinea pigs, as they are recognized
carriers of numerous parasitic species, some of which have zoonotic potential.
