Sažetak

The influence of ideas stemming from classical antiquity on Enlightenment philosophical and legal thought was also reflected in the works of professors of the Royal Academy in Zagreb, who, at various stages of their education and academic careers, referred to authors of classical Greek and Roman thought. This paper analyzes the notes of Konstantin Farkaš taken during his legal studies in Pest, and the published examination theses of professor Pavao Antun Marković. Based on these documents, one can observe the influence of ancient ideas on legal education in Hungary during the early 19th century. However, this influence was not uniform and varied depending on the source material: Farkaš’s notes contained a significantly higher number of references to ancient authors, while in Marković’s case, these references were placed within the context of contemporary critical debates on public law. Therefore, this paper contextualizes and presents such relationships in light of modern understandings of the connection between antiquity and the Enlightenment. Furthermore, it argues that texts such as these, in order to fully understand the intellectual phenomena of the period.
