Abstract
In early Croatian literature, pastoral lyrics and pastoral eclogues modeled after ancient authors were part of the interests of writers from the Dubrovnik area, and until now, less scholarly attention has been devoted to their presence in the north or east of the country. Katančić’s classicism gravitated towards the influences of northern countries and included features of folklore, while Dubrovnik classicism was closer to the academic model present in Italian literature. The aim of the paper is first to examine the influence of the ancient eclogue on Katančić’s pastoral poems from the collection Jesenski plodovi (Fructus auctumnales, 1791) and to compare their characteristics, and then to draw a parallel between Croatian pastoral lyrical poetry and eclogues in 16th and 17th century Dubrovnik and Katančić’s classicist poems which gravitated towards the pastoral genre. The paper aims to contribute not only to a better understanding of pastoral lyrics and eclogues in Croatian early modern literature, but also to identify possible deviations from the ancient eclogue prototype.
