Sažetak
This paper analyses the portrayal of the Illyrian Wars in Ogledalo Iliriuma by Ivan Švear, one of the earliest attempts at a synthesis of Croatian history written in Croatian. Particular emphasis is placed on Švear’s unusual system of dating events before Christ, which departs from conventional chronology and results in numerous inconsistencies. The paper also examines Švear’s use of ancient sources – primarily Polybius, Appian, Cassius Dio, and Livy – and his interpretation of them in his accounts of the First, Second, and Third Illyrian Wars (229–168 BC). While the first two accounts contain several irregularities, the description of the Third War, based on Livy, demonstrates notable accuracy and consistency, supplemented by Švear’s moral and political conclusion that discord was the principal cause of the downfall of the Illyrian Kingdom.
