Sažetak

The discovery of an inscription dedicated to the Roman emperor Decius from the 3rs century (CIL III, 4010; today in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb) during the construction of the new parish church in Stenjevec in 1758 encouraged Baltazar Adam Krčelić to write a treatise on Roman Andautonia (manuscript in the National and University Library in Zagreb: NSK R3445). In that discussion, Krčelić presented an overview of the existing knowledge of ancient Andautonia and Pannonia in general in order to encourage his compatriots to more intensively study the antiquities abundant in Pannonia, and pointed out the possible benefits of such study in current political and legal discussions. The Dissertatio de Andautonio has thus far been regarded in historiography as incomplete and of little value and has not been precisely dated. However, through a thorough study of the text, it is possible to date it to the period between 1764 and 1769, and it can also be demonstrated that the manuscript is complete, with no indication that its beginning is missing. This observation can be attributed to the fact that Codex R 3445 was incorrectly bound, causing the front page to appear in the middle of the Codex. Nor can the assessment of worthlessness be sustained. In the first chapter Krčelić claims that this inscription denies the story that Stenjevec is the location of the ancient city of Parietina and explains the etymology paries – wall/ rock – Stenjevec. He considers what kind of remains of a Roman settlement would be expected to be found, as well as in sites such as Ščitarjevo or Sisak. The chapter ends with an extensive description of contemporary Stenjevec (the settlement and its church), and a review of its past. In the second chapter, Krčelić analyzes the elements of the inscription itself. His transcription of the inscription has some errors, which lead to some of his interpretations also being incorrect. In the third chapter Krčelić analyzes the claims of geographers and lexicographers (from ancient to contemporary) about the location of Andautonia and with some reservations he concludes that Andautonia was situated precisely in Stenjevec. His basic hypothesis about the location of ancient Andautonia in Stenjevec was later disproved by archaeological research which located it in Ščitarjevo. In the fourth and final section Krčelić analyzes the status of Andautonia based on the mention of the republic in the inscription, which is followed by an overview of the history of Pannonia / Slavonia in the early Middle Ages. He analyzes the form of government in Slavonia throughout history, and when he mentions the supposed charter of Alexander the Great to the Slavs, Krčelić is highly skeptical about its credibility. His conclusion is that this ancient inscription is by far more valuable than Alexander’s supposed charter.
