Sažetak
One of the most significant descriptions of Slavonia and Syrmia from the second half of the 18th century written in German comes from the pen of Friedrich Wilhelm von Taube (1728–1778), who collected various notes about the land and the people he encountered during his travels in these areas in 1776–1777. Ultimately, upon his return to Vienna, he published a three-volume book entitled Historische und geographische Beschreibung des Königreiches Slavonien und des Herzogthumes Syrmien with the aim of bringing this little-known area closer to the German public. When describing Slavonia and Syrmia, Taube also provides their respective histories and traces their origins to ancient Illyria. Given the influence of his work, which at the same time reflects the contemporary central courtly perspective of these areas and disseminates them to a wider audience, this paper presents and analyses Taube’s approach to Illyria, including both its ancient history and his contemporary observations.
