Contemporary Reflections on and Impulses for Synodality in Pastoral Activity: Contributions to a Co-responsible Practice of Faith

Sažetak
As a constitutive dimension of the Church’s life, synodality simultaneously manifests itself as an indispensable aspect of her mode of operation, that is, as a style of conduct and active participation. In recent years, alongside various challenges and tensions, it has borne many fruitful outcomes in concrete pastoral engagement and in the life of the Church in general, particularly within the framework of the recent synodal process in the universal Church (2021-2024). In this regard, the pontificate of Pope Francis has encouraged the revitalization of diverse forms of synodal movement and participation at different levels of ecclesial life. The theological and pastoral reflections that arise from these movements constitute exceptionally significant elements in the development of overall pastoral activity both today, and in the near future. This paper presents and highlights several such elements. Foremost among them are the renewed orientation toward the spiritual, prayerful, and sacramental foundation of ecclesial engagement; a stronger mutual recognition of all members of the Church, especially of those actors directly involved in pastoral activity; far more profound mutual listening; and a clearer appreciation of the specificities of individual ministries, responsibilities, and roles within pastoral practice. In addition, particular emphasis is given to the increased recognition of the importance of lay participation, with special focus on the role of women in the life of the Church, as well as the pressing need to confront more decisively the challenging aspects of the Church’s relationship with certain contemporary social and cultural issues.
