FFT spectrum and MRA based identification and stratification of root causes of current transformer secondary current distortion

Abstract

Current Transformer (CT) secondary current waveform gets distorted if the CT core is saturated or owing to the distortion of CT primary current itself. This article presents a unique approach to ascertain and classify the reason of CT secondary signal distortion under various conditions. At first secondary current signal of CT is sampled and stored and then Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is done on the captured signal to find out the presence of harmonics or distortion in the signal. To classify the reasons of distortion, Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) based Multi-Resolution Analysis (MRA) was performed on the captured signal. Based on it, analysis has been prosecuted to nose out the reason why the distortion has appeared. Numerous cases were considered to establish the uniqueness and clarity of the presented technique.
