Private Possession and Presumptive Ownership - A Corpus Study of Collocations in General and Legal Language

Abstract
This paper analyses collocations formed by the lexemes vlasništvo ‘property’, vlasnik ‘owner’, posjed ‘possession’ and posjednik ‘possessor’ in general and specialized language. These are basic concepts of property law that are also part of the lexicon of the Croatian general language. The study is based on a corpus-driven approach. Two corpora were used: hrWaC 2.2 (for general language) and a corpus of property law that we have created for the purposes of this study. Data were obtained via the Word Sketch function, and all relevant collocations of the aforementioned concepts in the two corpora were analyzed. A comparison of collocational relationships showed that there are (large) differences in the collocational behavior of the four analyzed concepts in general and specialized discourse. These differences are the result of a number of phenomena such as determinologisation, pseudo-synonymy and partially overlapping polysemy.
