Sažetak
Grounded on archival materials found in the State Archives in Osijek and the relevant literature, the authoresses present the significance of the Transit Port in Osijek during the time period from the late 1950s to the late 1980s, with a focus on the natural advantages of Osijek location. The city on the Drava represented a significant centre of lively trade, based on the land routes, natural openness and the passability of the Slavonian plain from North to South, i.e. towards Posavina, Bosnia, Central Europe and the Danube region. The Transit Port of Osijek, located on the right bank of the Drava River, 18 km from the confluence of the Drava and the Danube, has been gaining economic importance since the mid1950s, after one had made major investments in the construction and mechanization of the Transit Port, contributing consequently to greater goods traffic. Since that time, the Transit Port has been developing strongly, because it functioned as the storage of the imported goods before customs clearance and for the monitoring of the river traffic through the river port, which was gradually increasing, especially after the Chamber of Commerce of the Socialist Republic of Croatia and the Regional Chamber of Slavonia and Baranja had activated the Drava waterway status in 1974. By the Decision of the Federal Executive Council in Belgrade of 1st August 1975, the Drava River was granted the status of an international waterway, starting from its confluence with the Danube near Aljmaš all the way upstream to Osijek. The Osijek Port of Transit was granted the status of a permanent river border crossing for goods and passenger traffic. The diversity of activities, the construction of terminals, the gravity and the traffic capacity were elaborated until the end of 1980s, thus emphasizing the enormous significance of the Osijek International Port of Transit.
