Islam and Mathematics
Zlatan Gavrilović
Sažetak
In this paper the author tries to define the fundamental characteristics of the relationship between Islam and the natural sciences. At first he deals with the influence of Islam on the development of contemporary mathematics, particulary geometry. The author follows the historical development of mathematics in Europe starting with the Greek and Roman beginning. The works of Arab mathematicians have given mathematics several fundamental terms. To them we owe the introduction of the Indian written form for numbers from zero to ten.
The second part elaborates some points of the problem of the concept of God within the context of "negative theology", as related to some simple geometrical concepts. Finally the author wonders how much are the requirements of contemporary quant physics, actually, comprised in Islam. Throughout the whole study the author enumerates many names from the muslim history of science and describes their contributions in this field.
