Sažetak

At the beginning of the 20th century, young Croatian Catholics were
associated with the Bishop of Krk, Antun MahniÊ, as they were attracted by
the offered organisation of their young lives and uncompromising criticism
of wrong teachings and unacceptable behaviour. They were motivated by
the spread of authentic Christianity that was being presented to them by
the bishop MahniÊ, by representing the Party-of-Right Croatianism, and by
practising Christian democracy. Having met Janez Krek, Ivan ©usterπiË, Aleπ
UπeniËki et al, they became interested in social questions and the
organisation of various segments of Croatian society upon the foundations
upon which Slovene Catholic leaders organised the Slovene Catholics. However, in order to be able to discuss social questions and carry out
social action, a certain ideology and political practice is also required. It
was precisely in that area that the Slovene Catholic leaders were an
inspiration to the young Croatian Catholics. For their political reasons, Krek
and ©usterπiË advocated a view that the Slovenes and Croats should work
on their union in the common state. As Serbia was being increasingly
strengthened by its victories in the Balkan wars, Krek openly showed great
enthusiasm for Serbian heroism. The Croatian Catholics also accepted that
enthusiasm and promoted it through their newly initiated daily RijeËke
novine. Soon, they also accepted the idea of the unity of the churches and
the need for the Yugoslav union.
Thus, the Slovenes were present from the very beginnings of the
Croatian Catholic Movement as well as during its development and — to a
large extent — they determined its ideological, and, therefore, also
developmental orientation.
