Abstract

This paper presents the results of the survey conducted on the participants of teachers’ self-evaluation on modern teaching and learning quality indicators. The survey was conducted on a sample of 759 respondents — classroom and subject teachers, principals and expert associates, and students of elementary schools — in the counties of Primorje-Gorski Kotar, Istria, and Lika-Senj.
Classroom and subject teachers, principals, and expert associates consider an encouraging teaching atmosphere, the interests and needs of the students, and the application of modern teaching and learning strategies to be the most important measurable indicators of teaching and learning quality. The respondent ranked relatively low the
indicators focusing on (self)evaluation activities: the transparency of expected achievements and the internal motivation levels of students for learning and co-deciding in the selection of contents and in the creation of the teaching process.
The analysis of the students’ ranking show that students place at the top the teaching and learning quality indicator related to the level of interest in the subject and ease of learning. Indicators contributing significantly to the application of acquired knowledge in real life, a serene atmosphere, humour, practice in critical thinking, and the acquisition and development of meta-cognitive competencies also ranked high.
Through a factor analysis, twenty-four quality indicators of modern teaching and learning were categorised into three groups, both in the students’ assessments and in the adult respondents’ assessments. Statistically significant differences in their way of thinking were established. Students prefer a serene and encouraging teaching environment accompanied by the application of modern teaching technologies and self-evaluation of the learning process and outcome.
The research results have an applicative value because they point out which indicators should be particularly borne in mind in the modern teaching and learning process.
