Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a theoretical analysis and an empirical research of teacher professional development through the phenomenon of supervision. It begins with the claim that continuous and high-quality teacher professional development is of importance for a modern school. Different studying and teaching models have been presented, along with their features (transmission, transaction, transformation). The key phenomenon dealt with in the paper is educational supervision as one of the most effective methods of teacher professional development. The concept of educational supervision is defined, and the role of the school counselor in the cyclical process of educational supervision is analyzed. Based on a sample of 822 teachers and 73 school counselors, the research surveyed the attitudes of Croatian secondary school teachers and counselors towards teacher professional development through the supervision process. Research results indicate positive attitudes of teachers and school counselors towards exercising supervision in the teaching process. They find that such an approach based on experiential learning, wherein the basic method is reflection on the practical experience with the aim of modifying and improving teaching practice. This approach helps improve teaching skills and existing teaching methods, while it also facilitates their innovation, and overall school quality improvement. The results obtained may, apart from theoretical, also have practical implications in developing school quality improvement strategies.
