Abstract

We have presented recent scientific information about probiotics agents and fermentative milk, and their protective and therapeutic effect in childhood diarrhoea. The improved tolerance to lactose when consumed as cultured milk containing live bacterial cultures, is as least related to the reduced lactose level and microbial beta-galactosidase acting in the small bowel Low pH due to lactic acid in fermented milk prevent growth and can even kill intestinal patogens. Future studies should focus in specif strain of bifidobacteria and lactobacilli with attention to dose, effects of these agents on immune response by the host, and production of inhibitory factors against pathogens.
