Abstract

In this paper we give some basic information on musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) as a diagnostic imaging method in rheumatology. Through technological advances diagnostic ultrasound has become a highly sensitive and specific method for detecting inflammatory and destructive changes in arthritis. In the article special attention is paid to the diagnostic application of MSUS in clinical practice for an early diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis and for the assessment of inflammatory activity in order to make therapeutic decision and to attain remission. Also basic information is shown on the application of MSUS in imaging of entheseal inflammation in spondyloarthritis.
