Abstract
After inventoring and collecting seeds of local kale (Brassica oleraceae L. var.
acephala) populations from different climatic and edaphic areas of south western part of
Herzegovina, a field experiment at two locations with 17 populations was done. The
aim of research was to compare the variability properties of collected kale populations.
Analysed variability of plant height at technological maturity, plant height in full
blossom period, number of internodes in technological maturity, number of internodes
in full bloom, length of leaf blades, diameter folding, folding length, total yield of
leaves and total number of leaves. Between populations a wide range of variation was
observed. The greatest variability at both locations had the number of internodes at
technological maturity, and the lowest total number of leaves.
From natural populations adapted to less intensive conditions selection and
multiplication of seeds was done as a possible material for plant breeding. Some
selected population would be a good source of genetic variability and potential material
for breeding to adaptation on local production conditions as a source for development
inbred lines in aim for crating hybrid kale.
