Abstract

The extended period of peace folowing the Venetian expansion beyond the coastal parts of Dalmatia and the treaties of Karlowitz (1699) and Pasarowitz (1718) created the necessary preconditions for the consolidation of economic devlopment in the Krka river basin. The economic developments included general increase in sea trade in
Adriatic, and consequently, infl uenced the importance and development of the Dalmatian ports, especially in the second half of the eighteenth century.
Within these developments the ports of Šibenik and Skradin emerged as important centers of maritime trade. The increase in port activities had impact on the development of manufacture, beginning of the coal exploitation in Siverić, and, at the very end of Venetian rule, the construction of modern roads.
