Abstract

SUMMARY
Impressionism in literature, as one of the numerous aestheticistic (early-modernism) trends from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, positioned its central and thematic-motive interests in discribing individual sensations of the subject-viewer intitiated by the perpetually changing conditions – first of all the lighting and colors in the exterior environment. As the apparent necessity was to note down quickly such transitory impressions with adequate descriptive and affective response on the text's style level, the most adequate (and thereby the most liked) impressionistic figure of speech became the „ornamental adjective“, i.e. the epithet. As one of the most „authentic“ and most long-lived homeland literary impressionists, Dragutin Domjanić had also based a major part of his poetical and figure of speech expressions on the epithets, both in Shtokavian as well as those in his Kajkavian lyrical poetry; the various apparent variants, functions and effects of which are researched in the paper. Of course, although found in a distinctly minor part of Domjanić's impressionistic poetical opus, traces of other figures close to those impressionistic ones, such as metaphors, synesthesia, assonance, alliterations, onomatopoeia, comparison, paronomasia, polyptoton, are not disregarded.
