Abstract

In 1779 Ernst Christian Trapp (1745-1818) took the newly founded Chair of Pedagogy (and philosophy) on the University of Halle, established with the purpose of teacher training. In his inaugural lecture, published the same year, he advocated the necessity of studies of pedagogy as a separate academic course. Within this context Trapp analyses the position and role of university lecturing in educational studies, i.e. in training of teachers to be. This paper analyses Trapp’s deliberations on university lecture, taking into account his activities as university professor. The crucial aspect is the question whether Trapp has, in his understanding of university lecture, remained on the level of 18 th century reflections about this means of academic teaching, or his thoughts contain the aspects generally considered as the 19 th century legacy. The answers are important not only within the context of teacher training and university teaching in general, but specifically within the context of evaluation of Trapp’s work in the same university.
