Abstract

My long work experience in the composite classes, along with frequent inquiries made by parents and co-workers about the quality and style of learning and teaching students in a multi-age classroom, as well as my own professional curiosity, motivated me to explore performance of the students in composite classes and compare it to performance of students in single-grade classrooms during the first four years of primary school. The aim of the study was to collect and process data on average grades and to check whether the students attending composite classes have different average grades than other students. In addition, a survey was conducted among students in multi-age classrooms about their enrolment in secondary schools and colleges. The survey covered the period between 1998 and 2011. The main finding of the research is the fact that quantitative results show no difference in academic performance in subsequent grade levels (5th to 8th grade) between students who spent first four years of primary education in composite classes and those who were educated in a single-grade classroom.
