Abstract

Modem art ,is not the avlistic practice alone; art crit
ique explaining the art a»d expanding the horizon of understanding,
has also been part of i f s h i s tory. Vis>cal avt
critique, as part of the art cr i t iqrce foclcsed on»>oder» art,
has observed modalities in the artistic practice alterations,
thus undergoing certain changes itself. I/j ko Gore»če>ić
(Lav Grun)»as one of the f i rst modevn critics of >»odevn
a vt at t h e t ime o f i t s o»set and i n t roduction ont o t h e
scene of art history of this century. He wrote lilerary, >nusic
and especially vis>cal avl pieces of criticism, in the spirit
of great social t ransfor>nations of th e 1920-ies; later
on, he also u rote fheoretica/ papers, pri>narily on the relationship
bet>vec» the art and society, i.e. on fhe art changing
in the society undergoing transformations through revohction
itself. Although he did not u vite about the avantgarda
practice, his critic s»l >va a> ant-garde by natre, providing
theoretical hy potheses for understanding fhe role
and inlportance of the a> anl-garda. Until his premature death,
Govenčević had accu>nulafeđ quite a large and significant
opus of cri tical-theoretical papers, withorct wich the
history of our modernism uo>c/d be considerably curtailed
