Abstract
Citation frequency is certainly one of the indicators for the evaluation of the scientific quality of a paper. The article analyses the occurrence of the papers published in Yugoslav journals in the world scientific environment as reflected through the Science Citation Index (SCI) published by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), Philadelphia, USA.
The sample consisted of the papers published by 130 Doctors in Biological Sciences who were awarded their degrees from 1950 to 1980 by the University of Zagreb. The analysis showed that, of the total of 171 papers cited in SCI, 92 authors have been cited as the first authors. The total number of citations amounts to 376. Of 32 Yugoslav journals cited in the SCI, Acta Botanica Croatica has been cited most frequently (35°/o). Pratt index of citation dispersion in the group of journals analysed was c = 0.8 indicating that the distribution is concentrated (compact). As carriers of citations to Yugoslav journals a group of 196 SCI source journals has been identified. The distribution of citations in these journals and the Pratt index of c = 0.38 show a considerable dispersion within the analysed group of journals.
