Abstract

The Central Dalmatian island of Hvar with its surface area of 299.7 sq.km belongs to the large islands of the Croatian littoral. By its altitude (Sv. Nikola 626 m above sea level) the island of Hvar is one of our highest islands.
With regard to its climate, the island of Hvar has a typical Mediterranean climate. The mean annual temperature is 16.5° C while total precipitaton amounts to 701 mm. The Emberger’s pluvithermic quotient (Q) for the town of Hvar is Q = 86.6, which is a characteristic of the sub- humide climate.
The largest part of the forest vegetation consists, in the littoral belt, of the Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) and the holmoak (Quercus ilex) forests, and in the montane belt of the Dalmatian pine forests (Pinus nigra subsp. dalmatica).
According to the abundant literature provided by a large number of researchers of Hvar’s flora during the 150 year period and on the basis of our own floristic investigations, it has been found, that the flora of the island of Hvar includes 1095 vascular plant taxa. Out of this number 1038 species and subspecies, as well as 57 varieties and forms have already been recorded. But 65 taxons are indicated here for the first time and in the text they are marked by asterisk (*).
The older findings of a certain number of plant taxons could not be confirmed during the latest investigations.
