Abstract

Protected designation of origin (PDO) is one of possible means of protection of a product in the market which enables the producers to make greater profi t. The paper has shown legal background,
the procedures of the protection of a product at national and European level. Regulations on protected designations of origin (PDO), protected geographical indications (PGI) and food products
establish a unifi ed system of labeling of agricultural or food products at the national and European level. Protection of products contributes to the formation of identity and recognition of the region or the country by raising the level of competitiveness of domestic production, which is one of the priority objectives of the Croatian agricultural policy.
