Abstract

Olive harvesting in the area of Istria and Dalmatia is mostly done manually by different tools (combs). Different picking techniques are applied depending on the purpose of the fruits: size of the olive grove, variety, cultivation form, the age of the plantation, condition of the soil. Hand held shakers of different versions (electric, pneumatic, motor) which increase the effect of harvest for 30-50% are used more in comparison to the classic harvesting by hand. Simpler versions of tractor shakers shake the branches or the trunk, fruits fall onto plastic nets and 7 – 8 workers handle the process. Self-propelled highly sophisticated olive shakers are mainly intended for large plantations. The effect of these shakers is 400-600 trees per 8 hours and only two workers handle them. The goal of mechanical olive harvesting is to decrease the expenses of picking which can, in hand picking, be 50-60% of total expenses of olive cultivation and at the same time it maintains the quality of picked fruits.
