Abstract

Tangerine is a citrus fruit which is most commonly consumed fresh and fruit peeled. The whole fruit can be processed into high-quality foods product, until, the bark can be used as raw materials in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. The reason that the producers that does not reject peel of mandarin is high nutrient value and content of chemical compounds that have beneficial effects on human health.
Essential oils are a mixture of bioactive compounds, natural extracts or isolated compounds from the group of plants with high concentrations. The word “essential” is a translation from the English derivative of “quintessence” and in Oxford dictionary is defined as “extract the substance which contains the basis in its most concentrated form”. These are extremely fragrant liquid ingredients from aromatic plants. They are mostly colorless or yellow or dark brown. Essential oils are “by-products” of plants metabolism. They occur in specialized plant tissues that contain oil glands. Their role is to attract insects that help pollination, refusal predators and protect plants from disease.
The essential oils molecules are made from carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O). Combined with a large number of molecules, the compounds that are commonly found in the composition of essential oils are monoterpene or sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, phenols, esters, lactones, and phenylpropane.
On the Croatian market, except products of tangerine pulp, it is possible to produce the essential oils from the bark and leaves. The processing of bark and leaf would no longer represent tangerine bark and leaf like biological waste. This is a new and real possibility for products with designation of origin like “Neretvanska mandrina”.
