The Stranger and the Itch of Rebellion—Strindberg, Krleža and Sajko

Abstract

The theme of this article is a comparative analysis of the two at first glance disparate dramatic texts from various periods of Croatian literature. The first text is Miroslav Krleža’s youthful expressionist drama Michelangelo Buonarroti (1918) and the other is Woman-Bomb (2004) by the contemporary playwright and representative of the so-called new Croatian drama Ivana Sajko. The example of their dramatic character called the Stranger will be used in this article also to present poetic relations between Krleža’s and Strindberg’s work. The plays of Miroslav Krleže and Ivana Sajko feature two faces of rebellion, which revolt is recognized on the thematic and the structural level. In Krleža’s play we recognize a hero of messianic revolt, while Ivana Sajko’s text presents a radical social rebellion. The features of messianic, as well as social revolt in this article will be articulated by Robert Brustein’s typology. The analyzed plays showcase the features of expressionist and postmodern theatre, respectively.
