Abstract

Potatoes are traditionaly grown throughout the country on wide range of soils in continental and Mediterrean climate conditions. They are grown in rigids on wide rows and in the past weeds were control with several post-planting cultivations wich inevitably coused some root demage.
The increased reliance on herbicides for weed control has meant that the final ridge is offen created at planting. Although the crop offers good weed suppression, potato yield can be severly reduced by heav weed competition. Yeald loss is realeted to time of weed emergence, the weeds wich emerge erly, if not controlled, being the most demaging. Weeds also influence tuber size and effect rate and case of harvesting.
Perennial broad leaved species creeping thistle, bindweed, dock and coltsfood are reported as problems mainly in maincrop potatoes.
Annual grasses include cockspur, yellow faxteil, green faxteil and hairy fmgergrass as well as anual broad-leaved weeds fetham, common amaranth, common regweed, black nightshade and redshank are problem too.
Soil residual herbicides (metribuzin and linuron) for patataes also have some contact action. Metribusin is the most presented of the currently recommended residual herbicides. Low-dose sequential application programmes are often used. Broad-leaved herbicides are often used in mixtures with pendimetalin and dimethenamid. There is need for foliar-acting herbicide for post-emergence control of weeds wich escape control of residual materials. There is now a recommendetion for bentazon and rimsulfuron post-emergence with or without adjuvant, but there some restriction on their use.
Annual an perennie grasses it is possible very easy to control by aryloxyphenoxy propionates and cyclohexanediones herbicides.
