Abstract

Controversies regarding metaphors in poetic discourse relate to the recognizing of the meta phor, typology criteria, the possibilities for its literal translation, protection from the approach regarding the metaphor as an embellishment, to the relationship between a metaphor and a comparison, and its creativeness and purposefulness. The interaction model functions with two different concepts of two different things, which through interaction produce a third idea that can be one word or phrase, and the metaphor is the result of the interaction between two different ideas about two items. The interaction model is flawed in that it construes the metaphor based on the established connotations. In contemporary semantics, sentence is the basic conveyor of meaning; however, in semiotics the basic signifier is a word. Bearing in mind these two possibilities, a metaphor in a sentence can be interpreted as a whole, and on the level of an isolated word. When interpreting a poetic metaphor, the criteria of describing the metaphor as a semantic operation of perceiving the similarities in dissimilitude and its formal traits should be somewhat suppressed, and it should be shown that metaphorical meaning has an extralinguistic reference which enables the understanding of the metaphor in relation to the immediate reality. This possibility is of the utmost importance for interpreting metaphors in the avant-garde poetry.
