Abstract

The concept of “competence” is without a doubt one of the terms that dominates the field of initial teacher education (as well as other fields). This paper explores whether the structure of the contemporary initial teacher education aimed at competences is a novelty in its historical development or whether classical (content) components of the initial teacher education lie in its framework, formulated today with a new terminology. For this purpose, both current standards of initial teacher education in Germany and the approach to initial teacher education in the beginnings of the organization of the professional university for the initial teacher education are analyzed and compared. The results show that the constituent components of the contemporary curriculum of the initial teacher education were content components of the historically first draft of the university initial teacher education. Its aim was, as it still is today, to qualify teachers to competently perform the duties inherent to the teaching profession, even though the concept of competence was not operated with.
