Abstract

Alberto Moravia is one several modern Italian writers who gave great prominence to female characters in his work. The main protagonists in his novels are women who face a miserable and painful fate. The themes and motifs of his novels are primarily focused on the prevalent world-view and society of the times in which he lived. What follows from this is that great effort is placed on the feeling of resignation, powerlessness, the acceptance of fate and general unhappiness among his female characters. Although the plot of his novels is placed in the last century, the themes which he elaborated have not lost their importance. All his female characters are special and unique, yet there are still general aspects which characterise them, such as their thoughts, their sadness, intimacy, fears, sand the dreams by which Moravia presents the true face of a feminine collective. The intention of this analysis is to highlight the specific artifice by which this author has uncovered the complex psychology of a woman’s world. Moravia’s interests such as psychoanalysis, existentialism, and especially his obsession with the mysteries of the female character all had a profound influence on his work.
