THE SEGMENTATION AND PROMOTION OF SELECTIVE FORMS OF TOURISM ON THE ISLAND OF HVAR - A FUSSION OF AUTHENTICITY AND MODERNITY

Abstract
The island of Hvar belongs to the group of island situated in the Central Dalmatia. It is the fourth largest island o f the Adriatic Sea (299,7 km2) and the second longest one (68 km), following the island of Cres.
The economy of the island based on agriculture, fisheries and crafts, while tourism constitutes the most topical line of business. It has been stimulated by the unique climatic conditions and exceptional landscape beauties of the island, its cultural and historical sights and a variety of natural characteristics favouring tourist activities, relaxation and leisure.
The island of Hvar has an atmosphere suited to the modern tourist who is tired of the humdrum existence, city lights and concrete. It can offer and organize different types of tourism in its healthy and ecologically preserved nature, whether at the sea or on the land. The island presents an ideal combination of the assets that spring from its natural beauties, exceptional climatic conditions, location and cultural and historical heritage.
The island of Hvar represents a priceless asset o f the Republic of Croatia. Its potential has not been sufficiently capitalized on. The authenticities of the island have been lacking adequate protection and exploitation.
Tourism in the most important line of business on the island. Its contemporary achievements and forms have to be subjected to a change. Introducing new ways of approaching tourism management is going to render the island permanently attractive and rewarding environment.
In order to achieve a higher competitive ability and marker positioning, the island of Hvar as a tourist destination has to redefine its market positions. Segmentation and stimulation of selective forms of Hvar tourism would create a specialization and necessarily incorporated differentiation. That line of approach comprises various sources of competitive ability, which affect a substantial increase of the competitive merit.
