Abstract

The main role of deep litter in broiler and pig fattening is thermal insulation and absorption of faeces and urine. Litter also increases physical comfort, then stimulates broilers and pigs to explore the environment by scratching or rooting, thus minimizing stress and the expression of species abnormal behaviour. Besides, litter mixed with faeces is outstanding manure, rich with nitrogen compounds. Microclimate conditions in dwellings, production results and disease occurrence depend on the quality and type of the litter.
