Abstract

The author presents an event connected with bishop Strossmayer and his activities as the Catholic church administrator in Serbia and also Strossmayer's role in the Vatican foreign policy during the second half of the 19th century. The particular event deals with a conflict between Polish cardinal Mieczyslaw Ledóchowski and Strossmayer. The conflict was caused by Polish missionary Wilibald Czok who was active in Serbia and as a result Strossmayer abdicated. The background of this conflict is in fact rivlary of great powers in the Balkan region and Vatican relations with Russia and Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
