Abstract
Activity of the sculptor Rudolf Svagel-Lešić can be attributed to the period of the 30s and 40s of the 20th century although his most fertile sculptural and artistic period was from 1935 to 1945 - in this ten-year period he created majority of his sculptural opus. The paper deals with results related to his biography and artistic work in Osijek, in the period from 1939 when he arrived to the city until the end of the War in 1945. Special attention has been given to the survey of important sculptural orders that Švagel-Lešić filled at that time in Osijek and neighbouring places. He gained recognition in OSijek and got many orders for the city and the surrounding places. Unlike his earlier arrangements the profitable orders by Slavonian nobility were replaced by the Church and wealthy citizens as new employers. Unfortunately most of these orders were not completed. The launched but never completed projects (Ortodox chapel at the military graveyard, Povischil family vault, altars for the Jesuit church in Osijek and church in Borovo selo) remained incomplete due to unfavourable circumstances and condition caused by the Second World War.
